What
The Georgia Emergency Management Agency/Office of Homeland Security (GEMA/Homeland Security) will host “K-9 Down,” a free class for highly specialized local, state and federal working dog teams. Taught by accomplished emergency and critical care veterinarians Dr. Dennis Crow and Dr. Paul Williams and K-9 Medic Jo-Anne Brenner, the class will instruct handlers on how to diagnose and treat their canine partners under inhospitable field conditions. Topics will include how to assess vital functions, treating canine trauma and massive hemorrhages, dehydration, heat, cold and drowning emergencies, and toxicity and nose care. Each module will conclude with an exercise where handlers can practice procedures.

How
Exercise activities will require all aspects of emergency response and emergency management to include Gordon County, the city of Calhoun, Gordon Hospital, the state of Georgia, the Southern States Energy Board and the U.S. Department of Energy - WIPP.

Why
Gordon County Emergency Management Agency (EMA) recognizes its responsibility to protect the public from, and mitigate the consequences of, those potential hazards associated with the transportation of transuranic radioactive waste through the county. This responsibility includes the necessity for a properly integrated response plan in the event of an incident involving this low-level waste. With this responsibility in mind, the Gordon County EMA, in coordination with other local response organizations have developed policies and procedures to respond to a radioactive transportation incident, and have determined the need to conduct this exercise to test these protocols.
