OHS-GEMA Distribute Homeland Security Funding
To Walker County Emergency Services

(Atlanta, Ga.) – The Georgia Office of Homeland Security (OHS) and Georgia Emergency Management Agency (GEMA), on behalf of Governor Sonny Perdue, recently reimbursed the Walker County Emergency Services (Fire and Rescue) $21,000 for mass casualty and weapons of mass destruction (WMD) equipment. The funding is part of a grant totaling $319,997 to enhance the county’s ability to respond to incidents.

Walker County now has medical supplies to assist more than 95 trauma casualties, as well as properly monitor and suit out emergency responders during natural or man-made disasters. “It is critical that emergency personnel have the proper tools available to respond to an incident. This equipment enhances Walker County’s existing capabilities, while also helping build capacity for homeland security response efforts statewide,” said OHS-EMA Director Mike Sherberger.

The primary purpose of the federal homeland security funding is to strengthen the state’s overall capability to respond to acts of terrorism. The funding, administered by GEMA, is part of U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Office for Domestic Preparedness (ODP) grant program.
