GEMA Distributes Hazard Mitigation Assistance Funds to Sandy Springs
ATLANTA -- The Georgia Emergency Management Agency (GEMA), on behalf of Governor Sonny Perdue, recently awarded a Hazard Mitigation Grant to the City of Sandy Springs for the purchase and installation of ten outdoor warning sirens throughout the city.
“We are working with our local communities to give them the latest communication tools that are labor and time savers allowing them to focus on being ready to respond to a severe weather event,” said Charley English, GEMA Director. The grant was awarded through FEMA’s Hazard Mitigation Grant Program (HMGP). The $285,683 grant represents the federal share of the total project cost of $425,766. The remainder will come from non-federal sources. These funds are part of FEMA’s Hazard Mitigation Grant Program, which funds to state agencies and local governments for projects that reduce or eliminate the long-term risk to human life and property from the effects of natural hazards by breaking the repetitive cycle of destruction and reconstruction. For additional information on the hazard mitigation programs please contact GEMA toll-free at 1-800-TRY-GEMA or visit the GEMA Web site at http://www.gema.ga.gov.
