US HWY 1 Reopened, Evacuation Order Still in Effect
(Waycross, Ga.) -- Authorities have reopened US HWY 1 south of Waycross after closing portions of it between midnight and 4:00 a.m.
Wildfire crossed GA HWY 177, threatening the main Jacksonville to Waycross traffic artery and causing the evacuation of approximately 70 homes in the Astoria community south of Waycross. The evacuation order remains in effect and includes:
The entire community of Astoria
Laura Walker State Park and Golf Course
Lions Club Camp for the Blind
Astoria Loop Rd.
Lloyd Strickland Rd.
Ann Strickland Rd.
Hinson Rd.
Check Point Rd.
Braganza Rd.
Local and state officials will further assess the situation this morning before determining whether or not to allow residents to return home.
